Understanding Terpenes
Terpenes, simply put, are organic compounds found in various plants, responsible for the diverse scents we encounter in the botanical world. In the case of cannabis, these compounds go beyond sensory pleasures; they influence the overall experience of the plant.
In cannabis, they work synergistically with cannabinoids like CBD and THC to create a spectrum of effects that alters a user’s perception and/or impacts their body’s ability to heal.
From the relaxing notes of myrcene to the uplifting tones of limonene, each terpene adds a unique layer to the cannabis tapestry. If there’s one thing we know for sure: cannabis would simply not be the same without them.
Common Terpenes Found in Cannabis
Let’s delve into some of the standout terpenes found in cannabis and their distinctive characteristics.
- Myrcene: With an earthy and musky aroma, myrcene is a prevalent terpene in cannabis. This compound is not only responsible for the classic sedative, also known as “couch-lock” effect but also offers a multitude of therapeutic benefits (relief of pain, anxiety, etc), making it a key player in the cannabis experience.
- Limonene: If you’ve ever enjoyed the zesty scent of citrus while partaking in cannabis or cutting open a citrus fruit, you’ve likely encountered limonene. Beyond its pleasant, refreshing aroma, limonene is known for potential mood enhancement and antibacterial properties.
- Pinene: As the name suggests, pinene contributes a distinct pine aroma to certain cannabis strains. Beyond its role in flavor, pinene has energizing properties and respiratory benefits, making it a terpene of interest for those mindful of their inhalation experience.
- Terpinolene: Terpinolene, with its floral and herbal aroma and citrusy flavor profile, is known for its antioxidant properties, sedative properties in lower doses and energizing properties in higher doses.
The Entourage Effect
Now, let’s talk about the entourage effect; the reason behind how cannabinoids and terpenes work together to enhance the overall impact of cannabis.
Understanding how the entourage effect works is crucial for appreciating the full spectrum of effects that terpenes can offer.
In essence, the entourage effect is the expansion of impact of each compound in the presence of the other. CBD would not have the same healing properties and hence, impact on others if it was isolated on its own. It’s more impactful with other compounds; and that’s why we always recommend “full spectrum” over everything else.
According to the National Library of Medicine, “It is assumed that combining terpenes with cannabinoids enhances the mood-stabilizing effects attributed to the main two cannabinoids, THC and CBD.”
When it comes to terpenes, the entourage effect emphasizes the importance of them in modulating the effects of cannabinoids. It’s not just about THC or CBD; it’s about the harmonious interplay of how those compounds are interacting with the terpenes (and other compounds) present.
Choosing Cannabis Based on Terpene Profiles
As the cannabis market expands, we know that our consumers are becoming more discerning about their preferences, and with good reason! Understanding terpene profiles can empower you to choose strains that align with the exact experience you’re seeking.
Terpenes really are like a form of aromatherapy for the mind and body. Whether you’re seeking relaxation or invigoration, there’s a terpene profile guaranteed that suits your preferences.
By exploring different strains and their terpene compositions, you can tailor your cannabis experience to match the experience you’re going for.
